Looking Forward to 2017

2016’s been one of the most horrible years on record, hasn’t it? From refugee crises to political disasters, environmental disasters to a cavalcade of celebrity deaths including David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Ronnie Corbett, Garry Shandling, Harper Lee, Abe Vigoda, Prince, Muhammad Ali, Anton Yelchin, Kenny Baker, Gene Wilder, Richard Thompson, Leonard Cohen, Andrew Sachs, Zsa Zsa Gabor, George Michael, Carrie Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds. So it’s wonderful to have 2016 over with. We can only hope everything will be better in 2017.           Or can we? Through methods I cannot disclose, I’ve peered into the future and caught a glimpse of what 2017 holds. Here are the things you deserve to be warned about: January: Donald Trump is inaugurated the 45th President of the United States. Meat Loaf performs at the ceremony and is soon after appointed Secretary of Agriculture when Trump realizes he doesn’t have one yet. Trump...

Game of Thrones Season 6: The American Presidential Election!

U.S. Election, stop being a season of Game of Thrones ! It’s insane but it’s exactly what the presidential race has turned into. All you need to do is slightly alter the terminology.           We thought it would end after the fall of House Bush but the War of the Five Presidents has continued to divide and strike terror into the hearts of Americans. And all the candidates are exhibiting the traits of their Westeros counterparts. Rubio Stark -the promising young claimant who was starting to falter at which point he decided to do something rash: play the enemy’s game by throwing juvenile insults. He paid for this though when his entire campaign was massacred (figuratively for now) in his own state no less. Hilary Targaryen -many would say she looks like a dragon, so why not be the mother of them? She’s been playing the long game seemingly from childhood. Though publicly nice enough, you wonder just how power hungry she ...

Trudeau Shuffles the Deck

Have you seen the new cabinet? It’s looking nice enough. A lot more variety than before, smaller more compatible, I think it’s going to work very well in my sitting room. But enough about that….did you hear recently elected Prime Minister Trudeau has is assembled his…group of people who help him govern? …I can’t remember the actual name just now. It’ll come to me…                 Trudeau’s made a pledge to fill his collection of executive government officials with diversity. Fifty percent of them are going to be women and there’s going to be plenty of ethnic, regional, and age and experience variety. That’s great! It’s so wonderful that the best people for these ministerial jobs also happen to conveniently fit into a visibly diverse whole. The Liberal Party’s not the kind of party to possibly have more capable, knowledgeable, or experienced men than women or women than men for these sorts of high ranking posit...

A Son Reclaims His Father’s Throne

It’s finally happened! We finally here in Canada have a Prime Minister who looks like he once belonged to a 90s boy band (though admittedly Diefenbaker came close)! Justin Trudeau’s band stormed the castle and mounted Stephen Harper’s head on a spike. Caught up in the excitement, many of Tom Mulcair’s forces joined in the siege forcing him to only look on with a gaping mouth as Trudeau was crowned champion! Did anyone see that coming? I sure didn’t. It’s a good thing I’m not a betting man because I was sure there would be a minority government coming out of this election for either the NDP or the Conservatives. Where did this Liberal majority come from?? It was like musical chairs in the House of Commons with the Liberals winding up in the Tories’ old place, the Tories in the NDP’s, and the NDP in the Liberals’. The Bloq managed to steal a couple chairs in the hubbub while the Green Party just didn’t participate in the game. It was really a dramatic and exciting night and this...

Why does Elizabeth May Hate Saskatchewan?

Stephen Harper, Justin Trudeau, Tom Mulcair –what do they all have in common? As far as they want you to know, nothing. Apart from the fact they’ve all been to Saskatchewan on their campaign trail this election. But one major leader has curiously left our exceptionally shaped province off of their foreseeable campaign list.                 Everyone seems to agree Elizabeth May did very well in that first debate. She’s even gained some momentum for the Green Party and boosted her popularity. People who aren’t hipsters or stoners now know who she is! But then why has she stuck so close to the coasts and more importantly, not visited Saskatchewan. This province needs some Green but May is skipping over it. It makes you wonder, why does Elizabeth May hate Saskatchewan?               ...

Fair Election 2015: Let the Games Begin

It’s the most wonderful time of the year again: election season! Time for the third of the population who actually votes to go and figure out which of this year’s crop of party leaders is the lesser of three evils. The election was called today a mere ELEVEN weeks before we’re actually going to be casting our votes. Yippee…. Each of the major leaders gave a speech when the election was announced. So did Gilles Duceppe and Elizabeth May (May’s in particular was adorable –she really believes she could get a seat). And so everyone’s gearing up, stating their platforms, who they’ll fight for, and so on. The Conservatives and Stephen Harper have the advantage so far in that in addition to showing their Trudeau attack ads every couple minutes on most major Canadian networks, they’ve also recently passed the Fair Elections Act which is stacked pretty highly in their favour. For example Elections Canada is not allowed to encourage young people to vote. Young people who generally may not be ...

China Gets the Olympics…Again!

Moose Jawvians are very disappointed to have once again lost the Olympic bid. Beijing who hosted the Olympics back in 2008 have managed to win the 2022 Winter Games outraging many locals here in Moose Jaw who’ve been bidding to host the Olympics for well over twenty years. “It’s an outrage!” says public worker Andy Nohandis. “They don’t even have snow! WE have snow!” “I think it would have been a show of good faith to give Moose Jaw a chance,” says an anonymous representative from City Hall. “In addition to putting in a bid every two years, we’ve hosted band festivals, word festivals, and even Toby Keith. Surely we can handle a minor Olympic ceremony like the Winter Games.” Moose Jaw is surrounded by nothing for miles in any direction providing ample space for Olympic tracks and stadiums. The city is even home to an arena, Mosaic Place. “I don’t see why they can’t just hold international figure skating and speed skating competitions at Mosaic” says the same representative C...

Trump for President!

Have you heard about the new season of The Apprentice ? The stakes are higher than ever now Donny himself has entered the ring!                 Donald Trump is in the running for President and that is amazing! Finally we’re getting some spice tossed into the salad of presidential candidates (and we needed it after Lincoln Chafee!). At this point the campaign which is still a year away has become one of the most promising in history. You can’t say it’s not going to be fun anymore! The guy who pretty much thought Obama’s re-election was the worst thing to ever happen to America now gets a chance to see if everyone else will get to feel the same about him! He’s going to dominate every debate with his loudness, pointed fingers, and toupee. It’s going to be the best thing since that Marx Brothers reunion where they all died!      ...

Clinton FTW...?

“Hillary Clinton’s running for President!” “Yes we know, what else is new?” “No it’s official now!” “Oh…okay.” That’s pretty much the universal reaction to the news that Hillary Clinton has thrown her hat into the ring. Putting aside the fact this was the worst kept secret in Washington, she intends to run for President a year from now. She announced it with a video that pretty much panders to the left wing in a fairly obvious way. It starts with a lot of different people from all walks of life looking forward to new changes in their lives and then Hillary shows up announcing her candidacy and that she wants to be the people’s champion to move America forward. The ad features people from at least three racial minorities, a gay and lesbian couple, an expectant couple, a young single mother, a woman on the verge of retiring, parents and children, siblings, hammering home the idea that she represents all Americans regardless of race, gender, sexuality, or social status. There’s a...

Well We WERE Overdue for an Oil Spill

Last Wednesday there was a massive oil spill into English Bay in Vancouver. Naturally this has made a lot of environmentalists angry, a lot of oil barons angry, and a select few in the West Coast fisheries industry strangely turned on. You may recall BC Premier Christie Clark criticized the federal government for the delay in containing the oil and cleaning up the spill. She thinks the responsibility should pass to the provincial government rather than the federally controlled Coast Guard, the members of which were presumably locked in an intense game of Battleship at the time of the spill. It took six hours to quell the leak during which time the spill got worse and twelve hours to notify the city –assuming incorrectly that those on the Vancouver Bayfront would look out their windows every hour or so. This annoyed Clark as well as the mayor of Vancouver who pointed fingers at both her and the federal government. Nevertheless by the weekend most of the oil was cleaned and Clark’s co...

When Canadians Lost a Free Cruz

Can you believe it? The American Presidential election is only twenty months away! TWENTY MONTHS! Politicians and pundits are going nuts in preparation of this fast approaching history-making event. And in the midst of all this a lone prophet has risen to the challenge to fight for the greatest seat the whitest house in the world. No not Hilary Clinton, her candidacy’s been an open secret for years. I’m talking about the good old government-shutting down love-child of Piers Morgan and Bob Hope: Ted Cruz! He’s rich, a Harvard alum, hates Obamacare, is not a friend of the environment, anti-gay, pro-gun, Christian, creationist, Canadian….wait what? Yeah, turns out Ted Cruz was born in Canada. This is terrific! Can you believe directly following the first African-American President, America could have its first Canadian-American President? Great! Or it would be if he hadn’t ditched his Canadian citizenship last year the moment it was found out. Clearly he wanted to avoid the birth certi...

Did Putin kill a guy??

Is Vlad Putin Vlad the Impaler? It certainly seems so. Last week you may recall the somewhat suspicious death of Boris Nemtsov a prominent Russian politician and rival of President Vladimir Putin. He was shot to death not too far from the Kremlin while crossing the Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge. The event was partially recorded via some form of CCTV, but another vehicle was driving on the adjacent motorway conveniently obstructing the actual shooting. Sounds like something out of a gangster movie; Tony Soprano couldn’t have done it better. And while the death is being investigated a lot of us can’t help wondering “did Putin do it?”                 Nemtsov was after all an outspoken critic of Putin and his government and if the grim president had a hit list, he would probably have been in the top ten. And in the past year we’ve been seeing Putin try to expan...
